Aki Nishiguchi

Aki Nishiguchi, a native of Japan, is an active performer and dedicated teacher based in Los Angeles. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in oboe performance at the University of Southern California, studying with David Weiss, Joel Timm, and Allen Vogel. While at USC, Aki's musical interests extended beyond traditional repertoire, as she dedicated herself to the exploration of both New Music and Early Music, performing with the USC Contemporary Music Ensemble. Her love for Early Music led her to immerse herself in the study of historical performance practice and period instruments, including the baroque oboe, renaissance shawms, and recorders, under the guidance of Adam Gilbert, Rotem Gilbert, and Paul Sherman.

As an early wind player, she has performed with Ciaramella, Musica Angelica, Tesserae, and Bach Collegium San Diego. She serves as Artistic Associate of Los Angeles Baroque and Assistant Director of the San Francisco Early Music Society Baroque Workshop, where she is also on the faculty of the Medieval and Renaissance Workshop.

In addition to performing, Aki is a committed educator. She directs the Performing Arts Academy Advanced Music Program at Diamond Bar High School, where she teaches music theory, aural skills, and music history, and coaches numerous chamber ensembles. She also teaches oboe as a faculty member at Idyllwild Arts Academy and Mt. San Antonio College.

Her recordings include releases with Ciaramella for Yarlung Records and two albums of guitar concertos composed for USC guitar faculty, produced by Doberman Yppan Publishing.
